There are many different parts that make up your faucet. You probably only know of the more obvious parts of your faucet. These parts include the handles that change the water pressure and the temperature of the water. And of course you know of the spout where the water actually comes out of. But did you know that there is a small piece attached to the end of the faucet spout that regulates how much water streams out? This part of the faucet is probably one of the most important pieces. Since it is so important, you should know exactly what it does. We here at Montgomery Plumbing would like to help you understand exactly what this very small piece does and why it is so important to have one on your faucets.

This small part of your faucet that we are talking about is called the aerator. It is a small piece that is screwed onto the end of the faucet that has a screen on the inside of it. You probably have one on all of the faucets in your home or apartment and have no idea that it is there. This part of the faucet actually regulates the amount of water that streams out of the faucet. The water comes through the spout of the faucet and goes through the screen on the aerator so that the water is actually coming out in many tiny droplets. This aerator is there so that you can conserve water. If the aerator was not on your faucet then you would probably waste a ton of water every month for no reason. It also helps to make the water a lot softer and less harsh as it streams out of the faucet.

Besides the aerator making your water much softer, it is also saving you a ton of money on your water and/or energy bill. Without the aerator you would actually be wasting gallons of water each day which will add up on a monthly bill. Rather than wasting water and money, you can spend just a few dollars and purchase an aerator.

Aerators are very easy to install and purchase. If you do not think you have aerators on your faucets at home then you should simply go into your neighborhood hardware store and ask for some. If you are trying to replace ones because they are very dirty, you should simply unscrew the old aerator and take it into the hardware store. Most aerators are a universal fit, but it is better to be safe rather than sorry. If you think your aerator is only a little dirty and you do not want to purchase a new one you can try cleaning the screen in a cup full of white vinegar or lemon juice. This is a great way to organically clean the aerator without having to use any harmful chemicals.
